Mobile App or PWA? How to Choose Before You Spend

A native app, a cross-platform app and a PWA solve different problems. Use this checklist to pick the right one for your budget and goal.

If your main goal is reach and low cost, start with a fast mobile-friendly website or a progressive web app (PWA). If you need deep device features, offline-first behaviour, push notifications that must work on every phone, or a place in the app stores, build a mobile app. Many businesses should start with the web and add an app when usage proves the need.

The three options

Progressive web app (PWA). A website that can be installed to the home screen, work partly offline and send notifications on supported browsers. It is built with web technology, so one codebase serves every device and there is no app store review.

Cross-platform app (Flutter or React Native). One codebase produces both an Android and an iOS app that you publish in the stores. It is the common middle ground for cost and quality.

Native app (Kotlin for Android, Swift for iOS). Separate apps for each platform with the best performance and full access to device features. It costs more and takes longer.

Questions that decide it

1. Do customers need to find you in the app stores? If yes, you need a store app. A PWA is found through search and links.

2. Do you need hardware features? Camera scanning, Bluetooth, background location, health sensors and advanced payments usually point to a native or cross-platform app. Support for these on PWAs varies by device.

3. How often will people use it? A daily tool (delivery, banking, fitness) justifies an app. A once-a-month service rarely does, because people do not install apps they seldom open.

4. What is the budget and timeline? A PWA or a well-built responsive site is usually the fastest and cheapest path. Two native apps are the most expensive.

5. How will you reach users? A website can be found through SEO and ads. An app also needs installs, which means paying to acquire users or having an existing audience.

6. Who are your users? If most use low-storage Android phones on limited data, a light web experience often beats a large download.

A quick guide by business type

  • Clinic, lab or local services: a fast website with online booking and WhatsApp. Add an app later for reports or repeat patients.
  • E-commerce: start with a strong mobile site. Add an app when you have repeat customers who benefit from loyalty and notifications.
  • Marketplace or on-demand service: usually needs an app for both sides, built cross-platform to start.
  • Internal tools for staff: a PWA or web app often does the job without store distribution.

Common mistakes

  • Building an app because a competitor has one, with no plan to get users to install it.
  • Skipping the backend and admin panel, which are most of the real work.
  • Underestimating ongoing costs: OS updates, store fees, bug fixes and support.
  • Launching with every feature instead of a focused first version.

A sensible path

  1. Validate demand with a landing page and a simple web version.
  2. Launch an MVP with only the core feature.
  3. Measure installs, retention and the actions that earn revenue.
  4. Invest in the next platform or feature when the data supports it.
